Are you interested in learning how to become an ultrasound technician? One of the most well paid jobs for those interested in medicine but not in going to medical school for years is that of a sonograph technician, sometimes referred to as an “ultrasound tech.” Ultrasound technologist training involves becoming skilled in the use of sonography equipment and being able to use it to take snapshots of what is going on in a patient internally without exposing them to potentially dangerous radiation. Ultrasound technician jobs are quite well paid, and in good demand.
If you are truly interested in becoming an ultrasound tech, here are the basic steps you should follow to receive certification in this field:
- Get basic training. Starting with high school classes if possible, you should take courses in math, computer science, and the physical and life sciences. All these fields are particularly important for those with an interest in this career. If at all possible, you should start studying these topics in high school.
- Get specialized training. To become an ultrasound technician, you should obtain either a two year AA degree or a four year Bachelor’s degree in a school that is properly accredited. If the school you attend has a specific training program geared towards ultrasound technology, this would be ideal.
- Take the certification exam. You should aim to get full certification as an ultrasound technician by taking the exam administered through the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers. Although passing this certification exam is not necessary in all states, by doing so you will be well positioned to find the best paying jobs in this field.
- Find a job. There are a wide variety of hospitals and physician offices that need the skills of an ultrasound technician. To find these positions, you should start by posting your resume on relevant job boards as well as checking for listings. If you are fortunate enough be be called in for an interview, be as prepared as possible before going to the interview and be sure to convey a professional attitude during the process.
In terms of salary expectations, salary will depend on your qualifications, certification and experience. However, a starting salary usually in the upper $40,000 to low $50,000 range is not unusual.
